SOLD - Pohjammaa/Ostrobothnia Puukko - SOLD

$245.00

This is from the county of Pohjanmaa in northern Finland and were sold to support the war effort. The handle features a Pohjanmaa man and there is a smaller version with the image of a woman in national costume.

The blood groove has the name of the maker, Iisakki Jarvenpaa. On the beveled edge is 'Maakuntapuukko', which exclaims it the 'County Knife'. There was a sense of pride carrying your county's knife. On the back of the handle, elegantly etched is the name Reino Passi. He may have ordered it or it was made for him. The family name of Passi is one of many multigenerational families who made knives in the town of Kauhava, which was famous for knife making.

These puukkos are highly collectable with cardboard sheaths as they carry so much history in them. In the beginning of the 1940's leather was hard to come by, hence the innovative sheaths of cardboard. The art deco influenced designs on the sheath tell a story. There is the log home at the end of the field with an old style well depicted on top. In the middle is a man who may be a farmer or soldier with a sheaf of grain in his hand. There looks to be fires in the field. The bottom image is of a grain of wheat. One of the top pins/tacks has been replaced to keep the knife in place for continued use.
